Society needs social norms and creates them in a way society sees fit. Patrizio Lo Presti in “Situating Norms and Jointness of Social Interactions” brings up the ideas that when drivers all stop at a red light is for one social goal, safety. The social norm of abiding by stop lights is not only to create efficiency on the road but also for the safety of all people. The reasoning for social norms as society constructs them is for on common goal between society and the people that live in that society.
